Plastic Relationships between Reproductive and Vegetative Mass in Solidago Altissima.

چکیده
To test several predictions of a model of linear, size-dependent reproductive output in plants, we analyzed the relationship between shoot vegetative (v) and reproductive (r) mass in five experiments on Solidago altissima from an invading population in Switzerland. There was large environmentally-induced and genetic variation in r and v. A large amount of variation in r could be explained by variation in v, using the simple linear model. There was a minimum size for sexual reproduction, and above this size, shoots devoted a relatively constant proportion (about one third) of their biomass to reproductive structures. We detected significant genetic variation for both the minimum size and the slope of the r-v relationship, but there was no evidence for an hypothesized trade-off between minimum size and slope. There was significant genotype-environment interaction for the slope of the r-v relationship. There were also developmental effects on the r-v relationship: plants grown from seeds behaved differently than those of the same genotype grown from rhizomes.

Can the Life-History Strategy Explain the Success of the Exotic Trees Ailanthus altissima and Robinia pseudoacacia in Iberian Floodplain Forests?
Ailanthus altissima and Robina pseudoacacia are two successful invasive species of floodplains in central Spain. We aim to explain their success as invaders in this habitat by exploring their phenological pattern, vegetative and sexual reproductive growth, and allometric relations, comparing them with those of the dominant native tree Populus alba. During a full annual cycle we follow the timin...
متن کاملWithin and between population variation in plant traits predicts ecosystem functions associated with a dominant plant species
Linking intraspecific variation in plant traits to ecosystem carbon uptake may allow us to better predict how shift in populations shape ecosystem function. We investigated whether plant populations of a dominant old-field plant species (Solidago altissima) differed in carbon dynamics and if variation in plant traits among genotypes and between populations predicted carbon dynamics. We establis...
متن کاملGenetics, experience, and host-plant preference in Eurosta solidaginis: implications for host shifts and speciation.
Host-associated mating is crucial in maintaining the partial reproductive isolation between the host races of Eurosta solidaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae), a fly that forms galls on Solidago altissima and S. gigantea. (We refer to flies reared from S. gigantea as gigantea flies and those reared from S. altissima as altissima flies.) We measured the host preference of males and females of both hos...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of microsatellite loci in the invasive herb Solidago altissima (Asteraceae)1
UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY Microsatellite markers were developed in the perennial herb Solidago altissima from populations within its introduced range in Japan to assess its population structure and to facilitate tracking of invasion expansion. • METHODS AND RESULTS Using 454 pyrosequencing, 16 microsatellite primer sets were developed for S. altissima. The primer sets were tested on ...
متن کاملInsect herbivores change the outcome of plant competition through both inter- and intraspecific processes.
Insect herbivores can affect plant abundance and community composition, and theory suggests that herbivores influence plant communities by altering interspecific interactions among plants. Because the outcome of interspecific interactions is influenced by the per capita competitive ability of plants, density dependence, and intrinsic rates of increase, measuring herbivore effects on all these p...
